Introduction
Afghanistan Center for Training and Development (ACTD)
ACTD stands for Afghanistan Center for Training and Development. ACTD is an Afghan national non-governmental and non for-profit organization, founded in April 2006, and registered with national ministries (Ministry of Economy, and Ministry of Public Health) of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. ACTD is the product of consultations, assessments and dialog among well versed professionals of the current development and democratization stream of Afghanistan. Immediately after establishment, ACTD focused on aligning its structures and systems to the higher needs of the country and international standards of non-profit practice.
From 2006 to date, ACTD has been implementing various projects in line with its mission and vision and based on the real needs of the population it serves. These projects are selected in close consultation and collaboration with local authorities, communities and all other stakeholders. ACTD besides its development projects also implements some humanitarian assistance projects based on the pressing needs of its beneficiaries thus linking relief, rehabilitation and development. Till date ACTD has managed over 200 projects in sectors of health, training/capacity building, research, and civil society development.
Sustainable development
Sustainable development, as viewed by ACTD is bringing desired positive changes in a community through enabling and capacitating the primary, secondary and even tertiary target groups to identify and respond to their perceived needs. This is the only way of bringing about a true sustainable and manageable Afghanistan-oriented development. ACTD believes that sustainable development is not something that could be (and neither should be) attained overnight, but extreme caution should be exercised to maintain provision of basic assistance to the community, while gradually introducing community-oriented developmental practices and disciplines.
In its almost 4 and half years of life, ACTD saw considerable expansion and institutionalization hardly comparable to other agencies inside Afghanistan. ACTD has coverage of almost all Afghanistan through its main strategic interventions comprising of civil society development; trainings (both at professional and community levels); research; interaction and linkage; organizational accompaniment; and provision of public health and community development services.
